Afro jazz songstress Selmor Mtukudzi has defended her dreadlock sale which has sparked debate on social media ever since she made it public on Tuesday morning. She said she cut the dreadlocks a year ago after keeping them for five years.

They are now being auctioned with Mtukudzi jokingly stating she was looking to cash in $1 000 on her Facebook wall.

“There has been mixed feelings about my dreadlock sale and to be honest, I don’t get what the fuss is about.

“I did not expect some of the responses but selling dreadlocks is not a new phenomenon,” she said.

Although many people have been supportive of the songstress auction a sizable number continues to attack Mtukudzi from all angles.

One Tinashe Micheal wrote; “Nditenge tsvina iyoyi aaaaaa? (Why should I buy such rubbish?)”

Another Tynah Carlissa was more annoyed about “high price” and wrote; “Kuti wakosheyi unotengese vhudzi $1 000….ndere kungopa anoda iri Mwari anokupayi wanyyy….bvudzi haritengeswe nxaa. (What is special about your hair to be US$1000?

Donate it to whoever is interested, after all God gave it to you for free. Hair should not be sold)”.

Mercy Tsitsi Chikupo; “It’s like transferring your demons on to my head.

“Gal keep your mop of hair. Mine I threw into the garbage can”

Others took the opportunity to mock the idea with Daco Dhliz writing; “Ini ndiri kutengesa ndebvu, 20cm, watsup me on 07915529 (I am selling my beard. Its 20 cm long)”

Givy Givela Gawaza wrote “Dollar for 10… Lol.”

Some of the comments were in favour of the musician and are as follows:

Oiza Chasie: “That is very normal to sell locks. She grew them, took care of them and maintained them.

“Inga Brazillian (hai) motenga wani $2000 or more. Seriously” (sic)

In spite of the hullabaloo, Mtukudzi has not been disheartened. She said the bidding was progressing in her Facebook inbox.

“I am likely to close the closing down the auction soon. The highest bidder so far has offered US$500,” she said.

The “Nguva Yangu” singer gave a brief back ground about her locks that saying she has looked after them well over the years.
