BIGGIE Chibvuri will make his debut on the professional golf scene at the US$10 000 Pre-Open Classic golf tournament, which tees off at Royal Harare this morning. The Inyanga-born player will compete against some seasoned campaigners. After turning professional two weeks ago, Chibvuri is looking forward to his first professional game and is hopeful that he will do well.
Formerly of Claremont Golf Club, Chibvuri will take to the field in the first ball at the first tee along with Emanuel Hungwe and Kevin Smith.
“I am prepared for the game and I hope I will have decent rounds, it is good to play well on your debut so I am looking forward to that,” said Chibvuri.
“I could have played in last week’s event but I registered late so I missed the chance.
“I always thought of playing as a professional one day and I am happy that my dream has finally come true. I think the game will always be the same and amateur golf is also competitive so I will not be under any pressure.
“I hope I will have some decent scores and come in a respectable position,” said Chibvuri.
Ryan Cairns is the defending champion in the second Golden Pilsener Zambezi Tour tournament.
Cairns will have to battle it out with the likes of Ignatius Mketekete who won the season opening professional event at Wingate last week.
Mketekete had to beat Tongo Charamba in the playoffs of the Tour Players Championship after they had finished the 36 holes tied on five-under-par.
Zambezi Tour marketing and communications director Tendayi Gwatiringa said the event has a US$10 000 purse and several top professionals have confirmed their participation.
Meanwhile The Zimbabwe Golf Association will on Independence Day host a fundraising Golf Tournament at different clubs across the country.
The ZGA has stated that Independence Day Golf Tournament will be an annual event which will coincide with the Independence Day celebrations across the country with the financial and material resources raised from all the tournaments channelled towards the setting up of the Zimbabwe Golf House.
“The Independence Day Golf Tournament will feature one main event in each of the five provinces of Zimbabwe Golf Association where invited guests will deliver their speeches after the golf tournament,” said ZGA.
The Independence Day Golf Tournament seeks to promote participation and excellence, raise awareness to the general populace and promote ethics and values for the sport of golf in Zimbabwe.
