The Zimbabwe Achievers Awards (ZAA) South Africa will this year honour the late media personality, Simba Mhere, by naming one of the categories after him.
The Simba Mhere Media Personality of the Year Award has been introduced to acknowledge outstanding players in the media fraternity at this year’s awards.
According to ZAA South Africa CEO Richard Moyo, the late Mhere has inspired the awards in more ways than one.
“It is an honour to have known Simba. He received unanimous votes from the public and it is only befitting that we salute him by naming this award after him. Because of the impact he had on many lives from a young age, we are also proud to announce that we will be introducing the Young Achievers Award into the categories,” he said.
Mhere‚ who was 26‚ was a popular television presenter on the lifestyle show Top Billing. He died in a car accident on January 31 this year in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The organisers of the ZAA South African chapter have since announced a comeback being held at a date that is yet to be announced. Following a successful ceremony held in November last year the organisers have promised a bigger and better second edition.
“We’re looking forward to putting out another world-class event to honour and celebrate our fellow countrymen who have excelled in their varied trades, while paying homage to the land that allows them to do so,” he said.
The event that is derived from the United Kingdom ZAA chapter that is now in its fifth edition. According to Moyo, they are an epitome of excellence of the Zimbabwean community working and living beyond the Zimbabwean borders.
“We can certainly make a difference, and I’d like to encourage all Zimbabweans to participate and get involved,” said Conrad Mwanza,of ZAA UK.
Fifteen categories have so far been unveiled and they range from arts, sport, culture and business, among others. The organisers said they will soon invite members of the public to nominate candidates via social media.
